Itch Adult Content Shadowbans

Hello, fellow netrunners.

This is breaking news, so expect updated information and changes to happen quickly. But for now, all content on this platform that was in any way tagged as adult, nsfw, or 18+ (probably including tags like bara, we don’t yet know) have been shadowbanned. That means this content is essentially invisible and can not be searched for—you can only navigate to these pages directly.

I encourage everyone who is a fan of String Zero or FVNs in general to follow these games through alternative means. Below is a list of places to keep track of String Zero.

FVNs in general can still be searched at: https://fvn.li/ and Visual Novel Database

This is likely a result of the anti-porn groups that recently lobbied Mastercard and Visa to crack down on adult content on Steam. Here’s some things you can do to fight back:

  1. Make others aware. If you’re an FVN fan, or a fan of adult games in general, make sure everyone knows what’s going so the games continue to get attention in spite of being hidden on itch.io.
  2. Pressure payment processors. More information below.
  3. If you are in the USA, pressure your lawmakers to pass the “Fair Access to Banking” Act.
  4. You can sign this petition with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Putting Pressure on Payment Processors

Many folks in the community have already begin putting together threads and documents for how you can reach out to payment processors to put pressure on them to rescind their baseless censorship of our content. Of note, it appears Paypal, Stripe, and Payoneer are the major problem here, but Visa/Mastercard should also be pressured.

Update 1:

Itch has made a statement, along the lines of what we all expected. What silver lining there is seems to be that they will follow similar standards as Steam and relist content after they have performed an audit. That does mean games not in compliance will be removed. (Most likely games with incest and other “morally objectionable” content in line with what Steam also recently removed.)

“Once this review is complete, we will introduce new compliance measures. For NSFW pages, this will include a new step where creators must confirm that their content is allowable under the policies of the respective payment processors linked to their account.

Part of this review will see some pages being permanently removed from http://itch.io. Affected accounts will be notified via their account’s email address from our support address. You can reply to that email if you have any follow up questions.”

Update 2:

Itch has begun to update its documentation regarding the limitations on adult content. These limitations are incredibly vague–so vague, in fact, they would ban familiar work such as Game of Thrones, and even the Bible itself. How they intend to implement this remains to be the seen.

String Zero circumvents all of these concerns EXCEPT whatever “animal-related” means, which could apply to essentially every Furry game on this platform. So is this a blanket ban on furry or anthro content? We have no idea. More information to be provided. FOr

The strange part one may not realize is that shadow banning is a pastime for even members of the community.  Its highly unfair yet deemed permissible.  If people can do it to others than so to can they can do it to projects.  This is merely the sad evolution we ignored.

This though is a matter of principle that shadow banning is not right.  Yet even among us some find glee from causing misery.

How 'cyberpunk dystopia' of payment services... Universe truly runs on cruel irony.

TRUE.

Republicans when free speech includes anything that offends their narrow minded ignorant small petty view of the world "ban ban ban ban".

(-3)

LMAO you really posted the same thing over and over without ever making a simple google search that would show that both Visa/Mastercard CEOs are US democratic party supporters

(+3)(-1)

The instigating force was a bunch of Australian TERFs and as far as US politics goes one party is infinitely more anti-LGBT and reactionary than the other.

Also the financial sector donates to both parties to keep their monopoly power as unassailable as possible.

you need to decide your point?
OP was the one wrongfully blaming a party when the 2 companies are way more democrat/left leaning, and despite your point of "donating to both sides" theres several clear examples of supporting a specific party way more, like both CEOs going to several dinners with democrat politicians.

its not truly about politics its about greed. AND Has nothing to do with being anti-lgbt otherwise several straight games both from here and from steam would not have been affected.

(+3)(-1)

You are deeply ignorant and I find it exhausting.

(1 edit) (-4)

if showing that it has nothing to do with "anti-lgbt" as straight NSFW games [from steam and here] and materials [like manga and novels from japanese sites] have also been afffected is being ignorant, then i welcome it. Thanks

I read what the one game that allegedly caused the mass butt hurt, yah it’s despicable.  Even so it doesn’t justify going after itch who after quickly learning of what that game contained removed it quickly, nor does it justify going after all adult nsfw type games that don’t contain simmilar content as the bad game.

thing for just in case... I hear some people have found games just completely wiped from the site. so to be safe, try and move the stuff you've got downloaded from the site to your PC. idk if them removing it from the site makes you unable to access it if installed on the app, but... just to be safe I'm doing it.

It looks like any game that runs afoul of Visa/Mastercard updated policies on adult content will be permanently removed from the site. It has not been made clear yet WHAT those policies are (but I expect it’s going to be related to incest, sexual content with minors, and rape, as was the case with steam).

I guess we'll find out soon enough.... sorry your going through this though. hope things work out for you and the other creators!
